REVIEWS

Of all of Africa’s charismatic wildlife, it is perhaps the elephant that stirs the most passion. A decade of poaching has reduced the population by a third, but there are still reasons to be optimistic for this unique animal’s future. This timely and beautiful book by Larry Laverty – through thoughtful text and stunning images – shows just why the elephant is cherished by so many and why that deep affection may just be what saves it.

Dr Tim Davenport, Director, Species Conservation (Africa), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)

This book is upsettingly good. It is deeply moving as Larry Laverty makes you think hard about who these extraordinary individuals and families are. The photographs are extraordinary, each and every one. Each frame inspires, and each left me hard pressed to move on to the next, imbuing me with memories of times on another continent when I was a child and spent time with a captive elephant who never knew such a life.

Ingrid Newkirk, Co-Founder and President, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)

I’m always thrilled when I meet people who love elephants like I do. When I first met Larry, I could tell he is deeply in love with elephants and his perfect photos show this. Even if you know nothing about elephants, this book will help you understand their lives, and I am sure that you will come to love them as Larry does and I do.

The Rise of Bacardi

In 1862, in the city of Santiago de Cuba, a family-owned business purchased a distillery, producing the first bottle of what would become known as BACARDÍ rum. In the years that followed, Bacardi expanded to become a globally recognized household name, renowned for its premium quality white rum. The Rise of Bacardi tells the story of the Bacardi company, from its origins in the mid-19th century to its expansion in the early 20th to its international acclaim as the world's leading manufacturer of spirits today. This is the story of a company, but it is also the story of a family who has faced political and societal upheaval, from the Spanish American War to American Prohibition and the Cuban Revolution, and has continued to go from strength to strength over the last 150 years. As a member of the Bacardí family and former employee of the company, Jorge Del Rosal provides a unique insider's point of view in parallel to his own story as the company expanded in the latter half of the 20th century to today.

The education system has failed them because it hasn’t evolved to respond to the advent of the Digital Revolution. It has prepared workers to meet yesterday’s challenges, not tomorrow’s demands. In Learning to Unlearn, Founder and CEO of Global Alumni, Pablo Rivas, an industry leader in digital education, shows us how the Digital Revolution is tearing down the traditional educational system and transforming the economy, building a brave new world for the 21st century. We already enjoy the best standards of living in human history, with better health, longer life expectancy, and access to the best tools and digital technologies. With freer societies and more global interaction, now is the time to rethink the way we learn how to solve the pressing problems we still face, re-engage those who have been left behind and build the world of tomorrow, not yesterday.

The Other Half

We live in a world that is unequal by nature. One could even say that its diversity is essential to all the world’s survival. However, inequality among human beings is one of society’s biggest problems.

This book is about opportunities. It is about being at the forefront of a paradigm change and a win-win situation. And it is about leading one of the most compelling and exciting shifts in our society: women’s empowerment. Company leaders are used to dealing with radical changes in markets, but there is a story that corporations all over the globe have chosen to ignore. This story is the sum total of millions of lost opportunities, because over half the potential workforce was left behind. Although half the population is made up of women, only 50% of them can earn a decent living. The Other Halfsets out to change just that.
