REVIEWS

Of all of Africa’s charismatic wildlife, it is perhaps the elephant that stirs the most passion. A decade of poaching has reduced the population by a third, but there are still reasons to be optimistic for this unique animal’s future. This timely and beautiful book by Larry Laverty – through thoughtful text and stunning images – shows just why the elephant is cherished by so many and why that deep affection may just be what saves it.

Dr Tim Davenport, Director, Species Conservation (Africa), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)

This book is upsettingly good. It is deeply moving as Larry Laverty makes you think hard about who these extraordinary individuals and families are. The photographs are extraordinary, each and every one. Each frame inspires, and each left me hard pressed to move on to the next, imbuing me with memories of times on another continent when I was a child and spent time with a captive elephant who never knew such a life.

Ingrid Newkirk, Co-Founder and President, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)

I’m always thrilled when I meet people who love elephants like I do. When I first met Larry, I could tell he is deeply in love with elephants and his perfect photos show this. Even if you know nothing about elephants, this book will help you understand their lives, and I am sure that you will come to love them as Larry does and I do.
