The Neo-Generalist

Return to Previous Page

The book advocates the value of multidisciplinarity, adaptiveness, responsiveness, curiosity; of people who can connect other people, ideas and disciplines in order to address big issues and shape our future. It challenges some of the systemic issues we have with the ways in which we educate, recruit and categorise. It values specialism, but only as an aspect of the specialist–generalist continuum, arguing that those who tend towards polymathic generalism are as relevant as hyperspecialist experts. Both are necessary. Sometimes, in different contexts, the same person fulfils both roles.
