How to have a quiet mind
With new year’s resolutions still a hot topic, many are following the positive trend of self-care and making wellbeing resolutions. LID Publishing looks to the experts to give top tips on How To Have A Quiet Mind for your best and happiest year yet.
The Guardian’s recent article on Learning to relax can be life-changing said:
The need for some simple source of relaxation can be seen in the initial surge in popularity of the adult colouring book, as well as last yearās 13.3% increase in sales of books providing spiritual guidance on how to live in a hectic world, and the mindfulness āmega trendā seen in Headspace, the meditation app that has been downloaded more than 15m times. Those of us who spent our money on these products were presumably searching for answers to some of the same questions ā and many of us are still looking. The bottom has now dropped out of the colouring book market, with Forbes declaring it ādeadā in May, and, in June last year, Headspace laid off 13 staff members.
According to a report by Ofcom this summer: āMost people in the UK are dependent on their digital devices and need a constant connection to the internet.ā It found that 78% of us now own a smartphone ā rising to 95% of 16- to 24-year-olds. We check these phones on average every 12 minutes of our waking lives, with 54% of us feeling that the devices interrupt our conversations with friends and family, and 43% of us feeling that we spend too much time online. We canāt relax with them, and we donāt know how to relax without them. Seven in 10 of us never turn them off.
How To Switch Off
Andrew Sharman, the author of The Wellbeing Book, gives us insight on how to switch off our devices and properly switch off our minds.
“We are bombarded with information every dat of our lives. News, TV, radio, billboards, social media and online advertisements; – there are literally tens of thousands of inputs invading our lives on a daily basis. As well as being practically inescapable, these inputs are exerting an influence. Even when we are aware of the inputs, we are still largely powerless to do aything about them. They come unbidden into our lives from a variety of sources and there are often just too many of them, and too many variables.
Bookend your day with carefully thought-out rituals to start it successfully and end it with a great night’s sleep. It will make a world of difference.
- Tune out: Whether you’re engaging with or disengaging from the world, enjoy a few minutes away from the noise. No texts, emails, social media, news, radio or internet. Spend some time thinking about a positive thing you can do that day, or reflecting on some of the things for which you are thankful.
- Do something for yourself: Whether it’s meditation, prayer, journaling, or taking some deep, structured, diaphragmatic breaths, be good to yourself for a few minutes.
- Read something that inspires you: This might be a few pages on a subject you enjoy or have specialist knowledge of. Reading a little everyday will boost your expertise in your chosen field as you keep up to date with best practice and the latest thinking.
- Move your body: Even if it’s only for five minutes. In the morning, do a few cardio exercises, such a star jumps or running on the spot. At the end of the day, try a couple of minutes of stretching or light yoga moves. Just moving your body will stimulate your lymphatic drainage system and move toxins out.
