Power and Majesty: The Plight and Preservation of Africa Elephants by Larry Laverty is the first book by the wildlife photographer and writer and features extraordinary images and informative text that captures the life of African elephants. Larry gives us an insight into his inspiration behind the gorgeous and powerful book.
Where the inspiration came from
Dating back to my earliest childhood memories, I have always felt a bond and preference for our natural world. As my life unfolded, conservation organizations caught my interest and individuals came forward to support my pursuits. As an 11-year-old bo, I joined the Sierra Club and the Audubon Society. In 1997, my passion and concern for the iconic buffalo who live in and around America’s Yellowstone Park met with the founding of the conservation group Buffalo Field Campaign by Mike Mease and Rosalie Little Thunder. I still support their efforts to this day. But it was in 2013 when a sequence of events cemented my passion for wildlife conservation, and I embarked on a path of action.
My first-grade teacher and lifelong friend, Elfie Larkin, had followed her teaching career with a 20-year career as a docent at the nearby Oakland Zoo. In 2013, the zoo published an endorsement of the first Global March for Elephants in San Francisco. Never having protested a darn thing in my life, I marched, met the organizer and friend of elephants, Lois Olmstead. Consumed by the horrific injustice committed against harmless beings, I educated myself, becoming an outspoken activist on ending the ivory trade and improving the lives of elephants held in captivity. My voice then drew the attention of Jen Samuel, founder of the conservation group Elephants DC. “Would I come to Washington D.C. to speak?” She asked. Feeling wholly unqualified, I respectfully declined and proceeded to book my first visit to Africa to learn about the realities of elephants in the wild along with the ivory trade.
This juncture is where my story took a pivotal turn. I was determined that if I was going to travel to the opposite side of the earth, I was going to photograph the adventure. Returning to photography after a 20-year hiatus, I upgraded my equipment and recorded all I saw. Utilizing social media, I shared the images, and before long enjoyed an enthusiastic following of thousands of elephant lovers around the world. It is to each and every one of you caring, generous, people who appreciated how I saw the world of elephants that I owe the inspiration for this book. Your encouragement in both the fight for the elephants and in the effort required to create this photographic collection spurs me on today.
