Last night, LID Publishing had the pleasure of attending the National Literacy Trust charity gala dinner.
Celebrating their 25th year, the NLT hosted their annual dinner with authors, publishers and some very special guests to fundraise to raise literacy levels around the country and celebrate their good work.
With guests including Malorie Blackman, Tom and Giovanna Fletcher, Prue Leith, Judith Kerr, Ian Hislop David Baddiel and more, it was a room filled with brilliant minds.
HRH Camilla Duchess of Cornwall was in attendance as a patron of the charity, giving a speech recognising the work The National Literacy Trust does and why it is so essential, as well as thanking everyone for their attendance and commitment to the cause. This included an appearance from the NLT’s Sport and Literacy Programme Manager Jim Sells dressed as children’s character Where’s Wally, presenting The Duchess with 25 children’s books to share with her grandchildren, thanks to the Fun Run the charity organised on March 18 which several LID team members took part in.
Authors and illustrators of the 25 books gifted to The Duchess were in attendance including Children’s Laureate Lauren Child, Judith Kerr, ambassador Cressida Cowell, Malorie Blackman, Steve Antony and Charlie Higson.
The evening was hosted by comedian, actor and writer Miles Jupp, and after a delicious dinner, culminated in a live auction of exclusive items and experiences auctioned off to raise money.
This included audience tickets to the TV show Have I Got News For You and drinks with the panel guests afterwards, generously donated by Ian Hislop; exclusive tickets to a screening of Noughts and Crosses, adapted from Malorie Blackman’s famous books; and an incredible one-off sketch from Gruffalo artist Axel Scheffler, drawn on the spot in front of us.
The gala dinner succeeded in raising an incredible £175,000 for the charity, but work doesn’t stop yet. LID will continue with initiatives to raise money and awareness for the charity throughout 2018 to celebrate our 25th year, click here to donate.
