International Coffee Day is today, 1st October, and LID Publishing is celebrating by compiling the books to keep you productive whilst sipping on your daily cup of joe.
The International Coffee Organization has chosen a very special theme for this year’s celebrations: ‘Women in Coffee’. Women play as important a role in the whole of the coffee chain as men. From planting the seeds to processing to trading to brewing… and drinking it.
The idea for the 2018 campaign goes beyond paying homage to women. They want to highlight the need for equity and equality in the coffee sector. This can only be achieved by empowering women to the benefit of the whole coffee sector.
Last year’s celebrations were very successful with coffee events held in over 45 different countries across the globe. This year they want to do even better, so join in on this very important occasion to celebrate ‘Women in Coffee’. To learn more, please visit their blog.

Wake Up and Smell the Coffee by Dr. Simon Mac Rory
Not only is the name entirely apt for International Coffee Day, but Simon Mac Rory’s latest book looks at teams and team management.
Today 90% of what we do in business happens through collaborative effort. This makes teamwork an imperative for every organization. Teams have risen to the top of the agenda as organizations seek to meet the challenges of an increasingly complicated world.
Teamwork is not rocket science, and there are no magic formulas or silver bullets. The vast majority of teams have it within themselves to substantially improve their own effectiveness without outside help.
This book is for team members, team leaders, and organizations. It puts the imperative of teams in context and is a call to action. It lays out the strengths, weaknesses, and challenges for the basic team types, and provides a guide for leaders and members on how to drive team effectiveness for themselves
Recent press coverage
Simon Mac Rory’s team hypothesis was featured in an article, Virtual: something that exists in essence but not in actuality, in the HR Director online magazine.
The virtual team is the Robusta coffee bean of the team world. Yes, it is a variation of the traditional team or project team (so still coffee, still a team) but, in reality, it is a completely different breed and this must be recognised. The Robusta bean tastes different and has nearly double the caffeine. The green bean of Robusta is about half the cost of the Arabica green bean. For sure, the virtual team is the Robusta bean of the team world.
