Simon Tyler is a much sought-after business coach, working with some of the world’s leading companies. His upcoming book The Impact Code provides 50 short but powerful ways to raise your impact level in business. Here, he shares some insight into understanding our purpose:
Where better to begin your impact journey than with purpose? The question “what is your purpose?” is timeless, most people have paused to contemplate this and just as many have given up, disillusioned by their inability to articulate their reason for being, to justify their existence on earth.
This first Impact Note is a foundation stone for your Impact Code, and seeks to unravel tangled thoughts and ways of going about this hunt for purpose.
Let’s be clear, purpose is not permanent; purpose is almost never one thing.
Read that again. Simply recognizing this impermanence can be liberating. If, by any chance, you have times in your life during which you feel you have purpose, treat this purpose lightly, don’t cling to it too tightly. Let it go when needs be and be open to embracing a greater purpose that, almost certainly, is about to emerge.
The act of finding purpose is, by its nature, elusive. Purpose evolves and emerges and only, to a tiny extent, in response to searching for it; ‘allowing’ is the more relevant action here.
And another thing; your purpose has nothing to do with what you do. Your purpose is about discovering and nurturing who you truly are, knowing yourself at the deepest level and guiding yourself back when you lose your way.
Any and all of the impact you have in the world will correlate to your (constantly emerging and evolving) purpose.
In absolute and simple terms there are only three things to do:
- a) Decide to be open to recognizing your purpose
- b) Identify, expand and express your talents
- c) Find more ways and places in which you can use your talents
To support your journey, there is a simple Six Step Purpose Toolkit I have shaped over my years of coaching and mentoring, and drawn from the lessons I have learned from inspirational masters, covering:
- Someone Else’s Purpose
- Away From or Towards
- Turnaround
- Naturally
- Love It
- The Inspirers.
