MAGNETIC

Humanity and the Asian Elephant

This beautiful book is a comprehensive record of the elephants of Asia. As the second book on elephants by photographer and writer Larry Laverty, Magnetic stands as a one-of-a-kind account of the lives of Asia’s elephants in the early 21st century. The culmination of surveys taken in 11 Asian countries, Magnetic features extraordinary images and informative text that demonstrate just how entangled the lives of elephants and humans are.

Presented with the blessings of a host of elephant owners and mahouts, the photographs in Magnetic probe especially deep into the lives of captive elephants. Unlike the elephants of Africa, the elephants of Asia, up to one third of all alive today, live lifetimes of servitude. In many cases, Larry Laverty was the first human of the Western world to be seen by communities where these captive elephants live and work. And while such circumstances for elephants are disappearing, those remaining represent thousands of years of an unequalled relationship between humanity and another species. Magnetic will open your eyes as it opens your heart to the endearing and tragic lives of Asia’s endangered elephants.
