Ivan Yong, the author of The Pharaoh’s Pitch: Unearthing Ancient Egyptian Wisdom for Sales Success, hosted a “Mentors Reading Club” event at The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 21 March 2025. He co-founded the club in 2024 alongside his mentor, Professor Anthony Teo, Chevalier of the Order of Palmes Académique, who is also a published author. Their shared vision is to inspire and cultivate a lifelong reading habit among undergraduates and graduates, fostering intellectual growth and personal development through the power of books.
Ivan, who has been mentoring students at the university for the past 11 years, firmly believes that reading is a transformative tool. He argues that it not only sharpens critical thinking but also nurtures creativity—a vital competency in the 21st century. In an era defined by rapid technological advancements and complex global challenges, creativity has become the hallmark of success. Ivan emphasizes that reading exposes individuals to diverse perspectives, ideas, and experiences, which in turn fuels innovative thinking and problem-solving. By engaging with literature, students can break free from conventional thought patterns and develop the agility to adapt to an ever-changing world.
The Mentors Reading Club aims to create a vibrant community where students can discuss books, exchange ideas, and learn from the experiences of accomplished mentors. Through this initiative, Ivan hopes to empower the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and creators, equipping them with the intellectual tools to thrive in their personal and professional lives.
The club also serves as a platform for mentorship, where students can gain insights from seasoned professionals and build meaningful connections that extend beyond the classroom. By fostering a culture of reading and dialogue, Ivan and Professor Teo are laying the foundation for a more curious, creative, and critically engaged society.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong is a research intensive university, currently ranked 36th in the QS World University Rankings 2025.
